In ancient Chinease history, tattoos were not traditionally considered artistic, or really even accepted. An idea commonly held in Chinese history is that an individuals body is a gift that was passed down from their parents, and as a result this gift should never be defaced by the presence of a tattoo.

In the early days of Chinese culture, individuals convicted of a crime and found guilty in a court, if the crime was severe enough, the judge would have a tattoo applied to the face of the criminal, and would then banish them from the country for a certain number of years. This tattoo placed on the face would forever mark this person as a criminal. This type of punishment was referred to as the “ci Peo” This means a tattoo exile.

Now days, the Chinese court system is much less severe, and the “Ci Peo” is usually only used by members of underground criminal organizations.

Famous Tattoos From History: In all of Chinese history there is one tattoo that really stand out. I’m talking about the most famous tattoo in all of Chinese culture.

This tattoo was created during the Song Dynasty. Yueh Fei was a famous general serving in south china, under a Chinese field marshall. The field marshall was is norther China defending the border when Yueh Fei recieved news that he had visited their enemy. Yueh Fei was disgusted with this mans dishonorable actions and thus resigned his commission. Fei’s plan was to return home so that he could take care of his mother. When Fei arrived at his home his mother was very displeased with his actions.

Yueh’s mother lectured him about how true soldiers stayed loyal to their country as was their duty. She wanted to make sure that Fei would remember this lesson for the rest of his life, and to ensure that he would she had the words tattooed onto his back. Fei resumed his commission and continued to lead the army in defense of China.
